How Long Does Lortab Stay In Your System?

Lortab (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) is a prescription opioid used to relieve moderate-severe pain. Lortab can remain in the body for up to three days. Standard urine drug screens can usually detect Lortab for 3-4 days after the last dose has been administered. Hair follicle tests can identify drugs for up to 90 days after the previous use, but these are less commonly employed because they are more expensive.

Lortab is a prescription medication used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain. As noted, this medication includes a combination of hydrocodone, an opioid, and acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol), a pain and fever reducer.

Hydrocodone, an active component in Lortab, is one of the most commonly prescribed and misused pain-relieving medications in the U.S. Like many opioids, this drug comes with a relatively high potential for abuse, dependence, and addiction.

How long Lortab can be identified in the body depends on a variety of factors. These include how much of the drug is ingested, how frequently, and individual variables, such as sex, weight, age, and personal genetics.

The Half-Life Of Lortab

Hydrocodone is the only ingredient in Lortab that is detectable by a drug test. Hydrocodone has a half-life of about 4 hours. On average, it takes 5-6 half-lives for the medication to be eliminated from the body.

How Long Is Lortab Detectable In The Body?

How long Lortab remains in an individual’s system depends on several factors. The type of drug test conducted will also affect how long Lortab will show up on a drug screen.

The most common drug test used to identify Lortab’s presence in the body is a urine screen. Standard urine tests can yield positive results for opioids up to 72 days after the last dose is ingested.

Detection windows or each type of drug test after the last dose of Lortab has been administered include the following:

  • Urine—3-4 days
  • Hair—Up to 90 days
  • Blood—Up to 24 hours

Of note, these detection times are estimates only and may vary between individuals.

Factors That Affect How Long Lortab Can Be Detected

Many variables can affect the length of time Lortab can be identified in a person’s body, and these factors can vary for each individual.

The most common factors that influence how long Lortab can be detected in the system include the following:

Frequency and Duration Of Use – How long an individual uses Lortab will affect how long the drug can be found in the body by a drug screen. A person who uses Lortab daily or in excessive amounts may retain the drug in their system for a more prolonged period than others who use smaller doses or infrequently.

Metabolism – Individuals with relatively fast metabolisms will break down and eliminate drugs and other toxic substances from their bodies more rapidly than those with slower metabolisms.

Age – Younger people will typically eliminate substances, such as Lortab, more rapidly than older individuals.

Body Mass Index – Lortab dosages are sometimes prescribed based on an individual’s weight, height, and body fat. A person who takes more of the drug than directed will break down the substance at a slower rate than someone using the correct dose for their body, as determined by a doctor.

Kidney and Liver Health – The liver and kidneys play a crucial role in breaking down and eliminated drugs and other substances. A person whose organs are not functioning up to par will be slower to eliminate hydrocodone from their system than someone with healthy kidneys and liver.

Getting Help For Substance Abuse and Addiction

If you or a loved one struggles with Lortab abuse, seeking help for opioid addiction is the best way to break free from the cycle of addiction and begin to promote sobriety and health. Many people addicted to opioids like Lortab will need to undergo medical detox, preferably followed by an intensive addiction treatment program.

Medically-assisted detox programs ensure the safety of those withdrawing from opioids, other drugs, or alcohol. Medication can be administered that will alleviate withdrawal symptoms and, in some cases, mitigate drug cravings. Although detox is the first critical step in the recovery process, for many, long-term comprehensive care and support is the key to preventing relapse and sustaining abstinence and wellness indefinitely.
